Tech multi-millionaire and self-proclaimed “biohacker” Bryan Johnson became famous for his extreme anti-aging routines and ambitions to live forever.
Now he has turned his focus to something far more relatable: coffee.
Known for his rigorous daily regimen that includes red light therapy, UV light exposure, dozens of supplements, and even using his own son’s plasma, Johnson is extremely selective about what he puts into his body.
He says, it’s not just what you consume that matters—but when.

Johnson recently shared findings from a 20-year study based on data from over 40,000 American adults (via the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey).
The study suggests that coffee drinkers had a 16% lower risk of death from any cause and a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to non-coffee drinkers.
But there’s a catch.
According to the study’s lead author Dr. Lu Qi, timing plays a critical role.
“It’s not just whether you drink coffee or how much—you have to consider when you drink it,” Qi said.
Johnson agrees, warning that drinking coffee in the afternoon could sabotage your sleep and your lifespan.
“Caffeine has a five-to-six-hour half-life in your body,” Johnson wrote on social media.
“A cup of coffee at 3 p.m. leaves the equivalent of half a cup in your system at 9 p.m. That lingering caffeine can wreck your sleep.”
And sleep, Johnson insists, is the #1 factor for longevity.
